Full-Day Seminar: Interpreting For Victims & Sex Offenders – November 10, 2018, Las Vegas

“Yes, I Touched Her Down There”: Interpreting for Victims and Sex Offenders

Presenter:
Álvaro Vergara-Mery

This language-neutral workshop will invite the audience to actively participate in various scenarios that present the difficult task of interpreting for victims of rape and domestic violence and the offenders. These scenarios include examples of adults, children and gender non-conforming individuals and have been crafted from real life encounters in the medical setting and collected from years of experience. Participants will learn to effectively apply various techniques (from specific terminology to emotional reactions to effective interventions to deal with the challenges that languages like Spanish present where words have a gender) to navigate the raw nature of what interpreting in these cases imply and to convey the original meaning maintaining accuracy in order to preserve the clinical/legal importance of the session. Examples will be provided in Spanish, but participants will be encouraged to share examples in their own language combination.
